Cause of fire: Accidental operation of a stove
Extent of damage: 3 Apartments total loss 4 apartments with moderate damage
Brief overview of actions: Fire department received a 911 call from a resident of 46 First Street reporting a fire in the kitchen of apt. 19. Engines 3 and 2 along with Ladder 1 and Rescue 1 responded under the command of D/C S. Kalman. Upon arrival of D/C S. Kalman he reported heavy fire in the rear of complex and transmitted a Second Alarm bringing Engine’s 1 and 5 to the scene and a Teaneck Fast team. Upon arrival of the companies engine 3 stretched a 3 inch supply line along the North side of the building and with engine 2 put into operation 2 1 ¾ hand lines to begin attacking the fire in the rear apartments on the 1st and 2nd floor. Ladder Company began to vent the roof and began searches on the second floor and adjoining apartments with the rescue company assisting in the searches and ventilation. Engine 5 and 1 stretched hose lines into the court yard of the building to begin knocking down fire from the outside which was extending to the roof area. Due to the heavy fire conditions 2 addition engines and 1 addition Ladder Company were brought to the scene above the 2nd alarm to assist in fire extinguishment and overhaul. All companies continued to check for extension and knock down host spots in several apartments. Fire was placed under control by command at 22:11 hrs. Residents of 7 apartments were displaced by the fire the American Red Cross is assisting these residents with places to stay until there apartments are repaired.
